Wild Ginger and Martha Trachtenberg
Open Mike starts at 7:30
(sign up at 7:00)
If music is the universal language, then three-woman a cappella vocal ensemble Wild Ginger is the bridge between musical cultures. With a repertoire of African chants, European chansons, Latin American roots music, Spirituals and American Folk Songs, Candice Baranello, Caren Jacobs and Maureen Keelty are paving the high road between musicology and pure entertainment.
Wild Ginger’s taut three-part harmonies and lilting counterpoint vocalese—performed on the high-wire of no-instrumental accompaniment—suggest an alternative to contemporary ideas about World Music, performing overlooked gems from remote global provinces and interpreting them through the eyes and ears of womanistic humanism.
Martha Trachtenberg was a founding member of the Buffalo Gals, the first all-woman bluegrass band. Her CD, It's About Time, won straight As from Newsday and radio airplay both in the States and abroad. These days, she performs with her husband, songwriter/producer Tom Griffith, and with the acoustic trio, the Folk Goddesses. Martha’s songs have been covered by several nationally-known artists, including Little Toby Walker, Tony Trischka and Skyline, Nothin’ Fancy, and Missy Raines and Jim Hurst.
