Andy Friedman’s gag cartoons have been published in The New Yorker, but the “unforgettable songs” (NoDepression.com) written by the “hard scrabble singer-songwriter” (Time Out New York) and “erudite redneck” (Boston Globe) weren’t written for laughs. Nicknamed “The Hillbilly Leonard Cohen” (Athens News) and “The King Of Art Country” (Minneapolis City Pages) for his “shale voiced take of spiritual decrepitude” (Hartford Advocate), “weird, potent strain of art-damaged, ragged-but-right country pathology” (Los Angeles Times) and “dark, singular sense of humor” (Nashville Scene), Friedman’s “hard-tack country originals bear the mark of a true artist (The New Yorker). Touring in support of his recently released and critically acclaimed sophomore album Weary Things (City Salvage/Kindred Rhythm) and backed onstage by his four-piece country-folk band, Andy Friedman & The Other Failures represent “one of the most respected bands on the Brooklyn scene” (Cleveland Free Times). “Weary Things announces Friedman's arrival as one of [Roots and Americana’s] smartest and deepest talents," proclaims Slant Magazine. Appearances on NPR's Mountain Stage and XM's "The Bob Edwards Show" have served to further develop Friedman’s growing national following. A long-time resident of Brooklyn but born and raised in Nassau County, Friedman’s appearance at Last Licks Café marks his Long Island performing debut.
