Ikebe Shakedown

Open Mike starts at 7:30 PM (sign-up at 7:00)

$15 General - $13 Seniors/Students

Combining traditional African and Latin rhythms with melodies and grooves steeped in American funk, soul, and jazz, Ikebe Shakedown offers a unique and powerful sound.  The 7-piece, Brooklyn-based band formed in early 2009 and has already taken strides on par with much more established acts.  After a slew of dates around New York City, Ikebe (pronounced ee-KAY-bay) recorded their debut 7” single and EP, Hard Steppin’, at Brooklyn’s Dunham Records (Make the Road by Walking).  The 5-track offering, released on Colemine Records in October 2009, has received high praise from critics, fans, and distributors, with noted shops like Dusty Groove calling it, “An Afro-Funk steeped workout…tight, hard charging and ‘Hard Steppin’ – [Ikebe Shakedown does] their thing with abundant classic stateside instro funk influences, too!  It says a lot that these guys are making a welcome entry to the east coast scene…”

Since the group’s initial plunge into the studio, Ikebe has gone on to play featured shows at colleges like Middlebury and Wesleyan and at some of New York’s largest funk parties.  In October 2009, Giant Step Productions and Knitting Factory Records asked the group to join Rich Medina, Jeremy Sole, and Roy Ayers as part of FELABRATION 2009!, a worldwide celebration of Fela Kuti.  The event also served as a send-off party for the group’s first tour of California.  Between dates up and down the West Coast, the band returned to the studio to record with producer/engineer Sergio Rios (Orgone, The Lions, Breakestra) in Los Angeles at Killion Sound.  The result, a full-length LP, is scheduled for release in 2010 and will give its audience a true window into the depth and variety present in Ikebe Shakedown’s music – the dance, the soul, and the straight-up get-down-and-groove.  You can find Ikebe Shakedown on the web at www.ikebeshakedown.com.
